Could you do this 5 weeks earlier than planned?

Hi Reader,

From the blog archives:

“Want to perform your new dance solo 5 weeks earlier than you planned?”

…That question was recently posed to me, and — being a keener — I immediately said yes!

Even though I hadn’t figured out a concept for the act yet.

Even though I hadn’t chosen a song or done music mapping yet.

Even though I hadn’t choreographed it yet.

Even though I hadn’t made my costume from scratch yet.

Even though I had a bunch of travel and wouldn’t really be able to work on the act until 3 weeks before the performance.

…so why did I agree to do this?!

→ Because I trust myself to do all of that.

→ Because I have control over my time and schedule to manoeuvre other tasks as needed to make room for THIS project.

→ Because I have past experience and can accurately gauge how this will all unfold — including the buffer time needed if/when something takes longer than it “should” — and I know how to create an accurate, efficient accountability workback schedule.

When I first started doing burlesque solo acts back in 2023, I didn’t realize how useful it would be to have a background in productivity! It’s so cool to apply productivity and time management skills to areas OUTSIDE of my business.*

At this stage of dancing, I love being able to say “yes!” to pretty much every performance opportunity I can get — including the shows that I haven’t pre-planned for in advance.

And isn’t having the built-in flexibility to jump at the opportunities you get one of the greatest joys in life?

I think so :)

If this is something you want to create for yourself, here are 3 questions to get you started…

  1. If you were presented with the opportunity to do ____ a full 5 weeks earlier than you planned, what would you theoretically want/need to change — in terms of your schedule, priorities, etc — in order for that to happen? (Root this in practicality by thinking about anything upcoming in your business or life! E.g. What do you have planned for March 1st, and what would happen if that thing instead happened on Feb 1st?)
  2. If you had to rate your level of enthusiasm, are you excited about the things you’re currently saying “yes” to — or not? (E.g. List the last 10 things you said “yes” to doing, and then rate your enthusiasm for each of them. What do you notice?)
  3. If you could say “yes!” right now to ANYTHING (all other things being equal), what would it be? (This is a useful indicator of what you might want to start prioritizing!)

Productivity, time management, scheduling, and self trust are all SKILLS.

If you are getting in your own way — for example, if you are saying “no” because you don’t trust yourself to stay motivated, or if you are saying “no” because you struggle with deadlines — that’s okay.

When you know the ways in which you’re getting in your own way, you’ll be better prepared to do something about it…

…and there’s no better time than now to start building all those skills.**

Sooner than you think — once you start developing those skills — you’ll be confidently saying “yes!” to your dream opportunities. You’ve got this!

As always, I love hearing from you…

What's coming up for you? Did you have any "aha" moments as a result of exploring this?

Hit reply and let me know!

Have a great weekend,

Footnotes:

* It’s REALLY cool to not worry about whether I can make it happen, and to not be at all concerned about organizing my schedule and task lists with my hobbies. Many years ago, I struggled with this kind of thing, but now? It feels SO natural. This can be true for you, too ♥

** We can work on building those skills together! I’d love to help you make this happen: book your coaching sessions HERE.
